The latest installment is the Zelda series takes link away from the ocean and puts him in a steam train. This gives a similar experience to sailing around the land like in Wind Wakers, only this time you are literally on rails. This time you are actually playing as a different character who don’s the green outfit to destroy an ancient demon.

The Spirit tower of the land has been destroyed and it’s up to you to restore it along with the spirit tracks that span the land so that everyone can move about the land again. If you played the previous game (Wind Wakers) then you’ll be right at home as it is identical in terms of movement and combat using the stylus.

The chess-board is the world; the pieces are the phenomena of the universe; the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance.
—Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895)

The Dungeons have a fresh feel in Spirit Tracks as the spirit of Zelda is now with you meaning you and can possess knights and then solve puzzles using teamwork. Thanks to her new ability, she is able to teleport around the dungeons and help Link in a number of other ways.

The Game basically has the same mechanic where you go back and forward between the Spirit tower and other destinations to collect Glyphs. The Glyphs in turn open the land further and allow you to progress. This time though the game does feel a lot more varied which is a pleasant surprise from the wind wakers where there was some repetitiveness (especially in the dungeons).

Link also has a new whirlwind ability and uses pan pipes to awaken statues and summon birds amongst other things. The Pan pipe is operated by blowing into the microphone on the DSi which is yet another cool way that Nintendo have used the DSi’s unique hardware to enhance the game. Link also carries a whip which he can use to hit enemies and swing across gaps like Indiana Jones. It really is a lot of fun to use.

A Stander-by is often a better judge of the game than those that play.
—Samuel Richardson (1689–1761)

Driving the train as you can imagine can get a little tedious at times. Thankfully later on in the game you can walk between locations to shorten the commute. With a long single player experience (well over 15 hours) and a multiplayer mode in there as well, this really is one of the best games to come out on the DS last year.

I downloaded my copy of the game for free from the DSi Download Centre as I have a membership there. Memberships are only $39 for an entire lifetime and you can download as many games as you like for free after signing up. They have all the latest release games as well as the classics, movies, application etc. I recommend you go and check them out and never pay for another DSi game again. a mad keen DSi nut.

Visit http://www.grrrrrrr.com/dsigamedownloads/Nintendo-DSi-Downloads.html where members can download this and other new DSi Games for free directly to their DSi.
